French lawmakers push Bitcoin mining to absorb surplus nuclear power

Lawmakers in France are calling for a national review into whether Bitcoin mining could be used to help balance the country's ongoing electricity surplus. The proposal submitted on 12 June suggests that Bitcoin mining could help France use its surplus nuclear power more efficiently.

With nuclear energy producing over 70% of the country's electricity, France often generates more power than it can use. In 2024 alone, nearly E80 million worth of electricity was wasted, according to journalist Rapha?l Bloch.

Lawmakers argue that Bitcoin mining could have turned that excess into value, citing its technical adaptability and ability to act as a flexible consumer.

The amendment calls for an official report on how Bitcoin mining might be integrated into France's national energy strategy. Benefits include the potential to reduce stress on nuclear facilities, use excess heat, and repurpose abandoned industrial infrastructure.

France joins a growing list of countries exploring Bitcoin mining as an energy solution. Belarus and Pakistan have taken steps to study or implement mining strategies to manage excess energy while promoting digital sector growth.
